The Partnership announces #InterceptDV Campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

SACRAMENTO— In a recent memo, Commissioner Goodell announced that all NFL personnel will participate in educational trainings on domestic violence and sexual assault, also promising a substantial amount of resources dedicated to raising awareness of the two issues. The California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, representing domestic violence organizations and advocates across the state, is poised and ready to help the NFL implement this education with California teams and increase public awareness with a social media campaign called #InterceptDV.

We and our member organizations are the domestic violence experts in California. Our network has a keen understanding of the dynamics of abuse, and provides life-saving services while promoting prevention. The Partnership is a strong educational resource for the NFL in California. We have reached out to all three teams in our state, asking to collaborate in creating a path to real change in the NFL. We are prepared to partner with the 49ers, Chargers and Raiders on education and raising awareness through Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which begins on October 1. Our public awareness plan includes the following components:

  • In October, the Golden State Turns Purple: Purple is the thematic color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Partnership will use this overarching theme in 2014 and in the future as a way to engage Californians and make a statement that when we unite under a common campaign, we can end domestic violence.
  • In order to carry out the campaign to turn the Golden State purple, we are introducing the #InterceptDV Campaign for 2014.

When we discuss interception, we not only reference what needs to be done as a state to intercept the crisis of domestic violence, we bring up the role of individuals to commit to this concept in their own lives. The centerpiece of the #InterceptDV campaign is the #InterceptDV Challenge, which includes the following components:

Take the #InterceptDV Pledge:

  • intercept and intervene in abusive relationships, and
  • contact your local domestic violence organizations to donate and/or volunteer

Record your best interception

  • post it to your social networks with the hashtag #InterceptDV
  • tag three friends

Our Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities will roll out on October 1, 2014. Interested individuals can visit www.cpedv.org in October to get involved.

We hope to engage new partners and allies in this awareness campaign. The test will be whether we can all keep the dialogue on domestic violence going after October and team up as a state to end this public health crisis, which, according to the California Women’s Health Survey, affects 40% of women in California in their lifetimes.
