Webinar on New Visitation Options and Requirements in DV Cases
Date: Took place on June 18, 2024.

Resource

This webinar took place on June 18 at 12 pm PT. It focused on SB 599 (Caballero), a new law effective this year that establishes new options and requirements for child custody and visitation in domestic violence cases.

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, providing an opportunity for us to learn about what we can do to reduce risks associated with access to firearms. This webinar will cover new law effective 1/1/2024 under SB 599 (Caballero) and the intersection of child custody and visitation, domestic violence, and firearms-related risks. Longstanding California law requires the family court, when deciding custody or visitation, to determine the best interests of the child based on certain factors and to determine whether to require visitation be supervised, suspended, limited, or denied. Under SB 599, the state has defined virtual visitation for the first time and requires the court to ensure custody and visitation stipulations  be in the best interest of the child and be specific as to time, day, place, and manner of transfer of the child. The presenters will discuss new provisions and the statutory framework for family law cases involving children, domestic violence, and access to firearms, including a review of key family law provisions and promising practices to reduce risks.
